Ask an Author Week #10: Carrie Lofty

Question: What is the "coolest" or most interesting thing that has happened to you since becoming a published author?

Carrie Lofty: I had a book signing at my local RWA chapter (Chicago North) in December when What a Scoundrel Wants was released. Here are women I've been friends with for years lining up for me to sign their copies. That really freaked me out, in the best way. Their support and enthusiasm for my success really touched me, and I certainly never thought I'd have people queuing up.

Born in California, raised in Indiana, Carrie found the love of her life in England. What a Scoundrel Wants, the hot, adventurous tale of Will Scarlet and his dangerous lady love, was a 12/08 Zebra Debut. Scoundrel’s Kiss will follow in 01/10, featuring a warrior monk and an opium addict.

Ask an Author Week #9: Carrie Lofty

Question: What is your favorite "guilty" pleasure and why?

Carrie Lofty: "So You Think You Can Dance"!! I love that show, and I watch the US, Canadian and Aussie versions each year. I used to compete in ballroom dancing in college, and I was an avid belly dancer for years--never anywhere near being properly trained, but I adore dancing. I enjoy the energy and honesty of the competitors, how much dance means to them. Each person fights so hard for what they dream of, which is simply inspiring.

Ask an Author Week #8: Carrie Lofty

Question: If you could meet any mythological or legendary creature/person, who would they be and why?

Carrie Lofty: Robin Hood! Or maybe Wild Bill Hickok. Both serve cultural purposes well beyond whatever factual lives they lead, and it would be interesting to discuss their impact on the generations that succeeded them.

Ask an Author Week #7: Carrie Lofty

Question: If you could meet any author in the world (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Carrie Lofty: Shakespeare among the dead folks because--c'mon! The Bard! We might need a translator and he'd probably be a complete git, but it'd be fun. Among the living, I'd go with Ian McEwan because his work inspires me, frightens me, and makes me think I'll never ever be good enough. I love that humbling experience, and I'd love to talk with him about his perspective on being a creative person.

Ask an Author Week #6: Carrie Lofty

Question: What genre (if any) have you always dreamed of writing but haven't found the time and/or inspiration to write?

Carrie Lofty: I have a huge love of science fiction, particularly female-centered sci-fi like Aliens or The Terminator. I also love apocalyptic stories because the circumstances of having the known world collapse around you really tests characters, brings out their true natures. I've written two manuscripts, so now it's just a matter of finding the right hole in the market to get my stories out there.

Ask An Author Week #5: Carrie Lofty

Question: What is your favorite Season to write in and why?

Carrie Lofty:  Winter. I love the coziness of winter, where staying in all day feels like a good idea rather than some terrible waste of brilliant weather. Summer always means going to the beach (Lake Michigan) or taking walks. Winter...bring on the hot cocoa and another two hours of work!

Ask an Author Week #4: Carrie Lofty

Question: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Carrie Lofty: Salzburg, Austria. My first manuscript, which I'm currently serializing for free on my website, is set in 1804 Salzburg. I just fell in love with the city, but I've never been there in person. Some day!.

Ask An Author Week #3: Carrie Lofty

Question: If you could meet anyone of your characters in person, who would it be and why?

Carrie Lofty: Meg from What a Scoundrel Wants. She'd be a hard person to know, but one worth befriending and finding common ground with. Some friendships come easily for people, but not for her, which makes me think she would be incredibly loyal to those she let into her inner circle.

Ask An Author Week #2: Carrie Lofty

Question: If you could travel back in time for a month long vacation, which Era would you visit and why?

Carrie Lofty: I'd go back to the Edwardian/Gilded Age because it stands on the cusp of modernity, without the radical atrocities yet to come in the 20th century. That sort of unbridled admiration for modernity, new thinking, progressive ideals, and technology would be interesting to see first hand, although somewhat quaint too. Everything they would've been so proud of and so scared of would pale compared to what we know about the trials they had yet to face and the wonders yet to come.

Ask An Author Week #1: Carrie Lofty

Question: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have three books with which to read for five years, which three books would you take and why?

Carrie Lofty: The first two would be Atonement by Ian McEwan and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, because they are two of my all-time favorite novels. They're both intensely powerful, which means I've only read them once each, so a five year stint on a desert island would give me the chance to really indulge in re-reading and soaking in the brilliance. But then, because they're both such immense downers, I'd have to have a romance for my happy ending fix. I'd take Whispers of Heaven by Candice Proctor, which is set in 19th century Tasmania. It's a thick, meaty, gorgeous and complex historical that would last me for years.
